I'm heading out to Lake Grace on Thursday to grab some Yabbies from my cousins farm. Does anybody want any for their aquaponics system.

Pick up from Stratham 20km south of Bunbury

Cheers For that MR Damage.

It seems strange that we can buy them in Bunbury at the pet shops. I guess thats the ornamental thing again....... I think my system is ornamental as I spend hours down there with the fish.

Maybe I'll have to stick with my Gilgies :( :(

I think it's more a case of either the pet stores being ignorant of the law, or just plain flouting it because Fisheries don't police pet stores enough. I was told quite emphatically by Fisheries that under no circumstances were Yabbies allowed West of the line. My store at that time was on Albany highway, but was located on the Eastern side of the road, the person I spoke to at Fisheries told me that if I was on the other side of the road I couldn't keep Yabbies.

Murray Cod aren't allowed in WA, but I know of two pet stores where fingerlings could be bought. I haven't been to either shop for a while so I don't know if they are still selling them, but I can tell you that when I quizzed the owner of one shop as to how he was able to sell them... his answer was : "Why?...what's wrong with selling them?"... Whether it was "scripted ingorance" or actual ignorance, I'm not sure!

Yea there was someone on here recently stating they could source Murray Cod through the aquarium trade.

The concerning thing about yabbies is that they can escape without you knowing. They simply just shouldnt be sold within the boundary.

Not strictly true, but pretty much - there are, apparently, 1 or 2 people producing Murray Cod in WA, but under very strict license conditions and they're only allowed to sell into the restaurant trade. Hence, you never hear or see anything about them

I was told of one guy, up near Moore river somewhere, but I've been told he's stopped producing them.

Yeah, you could be right - my point was that it can happen, but it's pretty much like squeezing blood from the proverbial stone. It's yet another inconsistency in Fisheries, like protecting native species whilst at the same time stocking introduced fish into our waterways.

Last I heard it is legal to sell fingerlings of Murray Cod, Jade Perch, Goldens etc etc as pets from aquarium stores. There is some paper work involved that you must fill out stating that they are only going to be kept in aquariums and not released into water ways etc etc. There are a few guys still growing out Murray Cod for the restaurant live fish market in WA and obtaining a licence to do it shouldnt be too much of a problem if they are grown in re-circ systems. The issue fisheries have is with the supply of quantities of fingerlings for these species to the general public.

Murray cod are available here, if you know where to go.
Pretty expensive though, price generally ranges from $8 - $16ea for fingerlings.
I should be getting mine at around the $3-4ea mark hopefully.
Available in December if all goes well.
