Hey,

A complete newbie here; just heard about AP from a friend and think it's a fantastic idea. I've always been interested in self-sufficiency and AP seems like a dream come true! Still heavily in research mode at the moment but I'd love to get a system up and running soon. Plenty of space in the garden and plenty of motivation to build the system.

Any tips on getting started or some good materials to get in merrie olde England?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Dragosani, and welcome!

A great resource to get you started is the 'ibc of aquaponics'. It's a PDF downloadable from this site with details (and an accomanying video) covering the all the basics of building your own system.

I found all the materials were pretty easy to get round here!

Best of luck!

BIF

Thanks, BoredomIsFailure. I've been watching all the videos I can get my hands on. It's great to see the variety in systems and how people make them work for their specific circumstances.

Mattltm, I'm in Leeds, just out of the city in the suburbs so enough room to play around with my potential system :)

Cheers, Gazza! Nice to meet you.

Ello geezer, the sooner you get a system started the better, cycling can take ages, and ages... there are some really clever small systems on this forum you can get going while you are planning your ultimate system :D . this will get some bacteria growing for a faster start up if (when) you create a larger system down the track.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. Spent most of the weekend clearing out an area for the pond and greenhouse (waiting on a friend for that one), thank god it was a sunny couple of days!

Still researching but I think I'm narrowing down a few choices. Hopefully I'll be able to get some plans drawn up pretty sharpish.

I'll second that, I blame our cool temperatures!

My outdoor system's been sat for over a month and there's still a way to go yet.

The aquarium system (indoors with a heater) has been much faster.

There is an emerging comunity in UK and soon you wil be seing more folks on the aquaponicsuk forum.
It's hard to keep up with reading thread on a big forum and sometimes is best to get some advice from somebody that is doing it in the same climate region.
We are based in Somerset and we run an aquponic farm, if you need any help knock the door!

Aquaponic suk forum??? Not sure about that bio. Sure so much info to sift through on this big forum for sure, part of the addiction. Great to hear everyone from around the world having and sharing the same issues in ap regardless of the climate and all for free. Great set up bio, impressive and thanks byap too, also impressive.
