Koi and common carp are essentially the same species. EB, most likely a koi breeder would let you have some of the "ugly" culled koi to raise as food fish. I have raised lots of koi, many are "ugly" as common carp. Some folks can't get past the "pet" classification of koi. Like F and F says "whats wrong with koi?"

I can see that I'll just have to try eating a koi then I guess... Anything can taste alright if you add enough flavourings.

I like carp, its all common here. More than 90 percent of fish production is carp in Hungary. Its tasty and ist the hardiest fish I can imagine, but I wont do it. Why? Because its cheap and its bony ;)

A story about carp:

We have a trout fishery probably the one and only, the best, the oldest in the country. pisztrangtelep.hu (no english text, try google translate, its a historical site, fabulous place, unbelivable storries)

So I have been there two years ago. The creek is crosing the site, its devided to boxes by grids to stop the fish getting away. It looks like this: A grid in the front... about 50 trought... an other grid... an other 50 trought / grid / trouht / grid / trouht / grid.. and so on. You walk by the creek, it flows by you the trout swim in their boxes. I was walking down the boxes, and in the last box I suddenly found big fat carps swimming hard to avoind beeing hit by the last grid.

I asked the one of the fishers what do these carp do here, why are they here? He said: "We buy these lake carps, put tham in the creek for two weeks. We dont feed tham, and they have to swim non stop, so they lose some weight. After two weeks they lose most of the fat an could be sold with profit. 5-6kg lake carps are fat, but we make them fitt." ;)

Snowing again but i have made some progress. I installed a webcamera, im testing it. I will have some nice timelapses about the building process, and later from inside. I wont give live pictures cause of bandwidth issues, but some delayed pictures will be there on my webpage. ;)

Also the first part of the greenhouse have arrived. I have a bought a temperature controlled greenhouse window opener on ebay. It has arrived yesterday...

I also have a timelaps about lumberjacking, but ist on my laptop that died two days ago. It has power supply problems, so the data is not lost, only have to wait a little to get it.

Finally looks like spring is on the corner! I cant wait the start!
Most of the construction materials for the greenhouse will arrive on satrurday, on sunday we start digging, and making the fundation.
Masonry will follow on third weekend of march, carpentry on the fourth.
Plumbing will take place in early april.

Inside I have started some paprika, cucumber and tomato seedlings too ;)

Have a nice day!
