Eating goldfish

I'm actually very curious about whether people have eaten and prepared their aquaponics goldfish.

I understand most people use them for ornamental purposes and for some reason have more qualms about eating them over other fish but I find that weird. Since they are carp cousins I've read people who infer that they must taste similar. Also seen that people say they have a lot of small bones.

Goldfish are hardy omnivores, produces a lot of waste because of poor diets, more difficult for people to breed than plenty of other options like Tilapia but that is what I enjoy, the challenge.

I am curious about experiences people have, more so because of the odd stigma I've encountered.

I don't see why you can't raise attractive fish to eat, I'm not a vegetarian nor think like one.

That's the attitude I don't understand. If it is like carp, and people eat carp, what can be wrong with it?

I wouldnt eat carp either... but I know some people do.

Maybe its a size thing, usually goldfish are quite small. :dontknow:

Where I live, commets are $12 ea so it would cost me a fortune to have a plate of goldfish for dinner

Provide them with the correct diet and no reason, same as most people will not eat Guinie pigs yet they are anational food in some countries.

In asia a lot of carp style fish are just minced up and this makes their fish balls for soup and patties for main meals. Gold fish can grow to a good size given space and correct diet.

Yes ccBear, the diet is what is fun about goldfish for me, snails, duckweed, shrimp, pellets are what I currently have for them and I'll fine tune it as I go along. I'm not afraid of eating anything really, as long as it tasted good

Great point about the cost Charlie! I could sell them for much more than it's worth eating them, only reason I've found to not eat them haha

Here in Italy some people eat the "dam goldfish" carassius carassius, looks exactly like a goldfish but just a plain gray. They are also sometimes called "wild goldfish" and supposedly, if your common goldfish were to live in a lake with little sunlight, a few generations down the line (we're talking years) they should start to lose some of the color.

They are also full of bones and their meat isn't so good, according to Wikipedia.

Glad to see Italians not discriminating haha I don't trust Wikipedia on its taste of meat :lol:

I'm going to try one of mine when it is at the 16" mark just to satisfy curiosity but the appeal of selling healthy large goldfish at premium is a better option than even "normal" edible fish.

I've seen "sacrificial" feeder goldies added to systems, then survive and thrive; fed on high protein pellets, they can grow quite quickly to large size. Many fish breeders sell off feeders as their low grade by-product and hence they can be purchased cheaply, and when nurtured, these fish can grow out to be just as healthy, colourful and spectacular as their higher-grade, higher-cost siblings; but not all.

Would I eat them? Personally, not whilst there are better quality fish available.

Thanks ccBear! You've put me off fishballs, i'll be thinking of those fat aquarium goldfish being minced up in a blender and rolled together into a round patty now. :shock:

But yeah, Argentina (and neighbouring countries) .. yummy guinea pigs, or Cuy / Cobayo. (though they're bred big).

Funny thing is the south american countries where they breed GPs for food have rabbits as pets and would not think of eating them. When asked why the people said why would you eat your pet. Funny world some time.

They certainly do not use the best fish in the fish balls and patties but the added flavours are nice

I wast just reading back through some old post's and spotted this one. :think:

reminded me of a party I was at one night during my mis-spent youth. A few of us idiots getting boozed up playing darts at a mates house :drunken:

. the bloke that owned the place was out in the kitchen cooking up a batch of bacon and egg sandwiches for all. :thumbright:

Next thing a goldfish in the tank accidentally got harpooned with a dart (I think it was an accident :shifty:

)

It ended up getting cooked up by the owner (the guy in the kitchen) and carefully placed into the bacon an egg sandwich that was given to the bloke that "acidentally" harpooned it.

Of course every body else new what was going on except him, after everybody had laughed their guts out we lold him about the gold fish on his sandwich. He just kept eating it and said is tasted great. :wink:

Not realy gold fish but I had koi a while ago, very tasty but way to much small bones in, not worth the hassle. I will rather eat a guinea pig than waste my time on a koi again.

i have eaten carp and i have them in my system along with some gold fish and silver perch, the good thing about carp and gold fish is i can breed them right here in my back yard with out to much effort, one tip if your thinking about eating carp/gold fish, don't let them get to big because they have more bones than most fish and lots of those bones are small and are in the flesh, there is an article on the net that shows how to cut the filet so you can deep fry it and that softens the bones, the carp i sampled was a large mongrel Koi, that is a brown wild looking carp, i filleted it, that's when i found all the bones in the filet so i cut away the belly section (no bones in that bit) and seasoned with salt and pepper and fried in olive oil and i have to say it was surprisingly tasty and i intend to do it again some time.
