Wouldn't it be easier just to have the equivalent of a chicken tractor so you can move the group around and let them fertilize the lawn or something along those lines. Seems easier than trying to clean out the pen all the time :dontknow: - FYI - I've never raised guinea pigs.

Hi scotty, I could do that, however it would mean having multiple tractors because the males and females need to be separate when not mating, the sow and her piglets need to be separated from the rest of the herd to ensure survival during weaning, and then males and female siblings need to be separated at 3-4 weeks old otherwise they'll mate with each other. Having a tower cage design allows me to conserve space, which is something I'm running out of living in the suburbs of the Gold Coast :)

This is the way i would be thinking is the best setup.
the guys in SA probably dont have the room or lawns to do this, so just go with what is easiest for them.

That makes sense Matthew. I didn't realize there was a need to keep them separate until I read the article I posted. I'll be interested to see how you do with the GP's.

Cheers

I'd try em but the wife was adamant she wouldn't even try one, if I breed them.

Women....go figure

No need for multiple tractors.

You would want multiple housing units but as you say you will want those anyway.

Yeah, my wife thinks I've lost the plot and can't believe I'm actually going to eat them. She did however say she would give it a try. I reckon they'll catch on ;)

I went to the pet store today and asked if they sold Guinea Pigs. The lady said that they didn't however they support a local woman who rescues them and refer all their customers to her. She gave me her number and told me to give her a call and she would give me the perfect Guinea Pigs!

I'm not sure how I feel about getting them from a rescue farm. It'd have to be a full on cover up story, she would be very interested to know that they were going to a good home ;)

They are going to a good cause. Ultimately worm food.

You're going to take great care of those Guinea Pigs. And then they'll die. But until then.....

Are you human?: occasionally
Location: Qld.
They are hard to free range we let them go in the veggie garden and they were very hard to catch.
They like some cover as they are a bit nervy and like to hide when scared.
A small tractor system with a shaded area would be perfect.
The males eat the babies so they need to be separated
