Weather was fine and the temperatures was okay, not too cold. Just right for trout really. Boy did they get some feeding today, with so much interest from the article in Habitat on Friday it was non stop customers and the fish were not complaining.
More people are believing that aquaponics is the way to go because it makes so much sense. Well many of us knew that already. With winter water restrictions, even though it doesn't always rain how are you supposed to keep a vege garden alive.

Full workshop today and the carpark is testament to that. I thought it made a great pic.

Winter conditions aren't causing issues with seasonal plantings. Participants were impressed with the health of the plants, minimal bugs and the raised beds.

Prepared for a planting demonstration, wash the soil off the roots and plant without any soil. You can grow seeds as well as seedlings and cuttings.

We have been running informative workshops on aquaponics for more than 12 months now. It was great to see all the seats filled today. When I look back over the last few years I remembered in the beginning how I would tell my friends what I was doing, they thought I was a little crazy, now the room is filled with people that think like we do :)
Having taken over an old nursery site, visitors to the shop had often been looking to buy plants, I would ask them if they had heard of aquaponics, most hadn't so they would get a tour of the systems. The funniest story was a gentleman came looking to buy a watering can, he was given a tour and explanation of the diplsay centre. He left with an aquaponic system :) hehehe

Photos from the November workshop!
People get the opportunity to ask questions as well as share their stories with other like minded individuals. Even those who have a system up and running gain a little more knowldege as there is always something new to learn with aquaponics. Information sessions are aimed at the beginner with simple and easy to understand descriptions. The problem with some workshops are that the instruction is often over the heads of the average enthusiast. We believe that using the "KISS" principle everyone has the chance to enjoy aquaponics and have success while learning new things along the way. It should be fun!

We look at what and how to plant seeds and seedlings, as well as what not to grow in a grow bed. How to manage the pests, as well as recognise who the goods bugs are and how to encourage them:)

Carl covers fish species suitable for aquaponic systems, and very important- "How to safely transport your fish to their new home".

The next workshop dates have been decided and we are once again running twilight workshops to avoid the hottest parts of the day. We include light refreshments  They will be held on a Wednesday evening from 5.30-7.30pm. As an extra special for January we will include editions 6-10, that is 5 printed magazines valued at $49-50. (January only) The workshop pack already includes course notes and edition 1-5 of the magazine on disc. Bookings are essential as numbers are limited. Workshops are held at the Backyard Aquaponics Shop and Display Centre in Jandakot. The dates are the 19th January, 23rd February and 23rd March 2011.
