Nice lookin system Joel :) why did you go for a centre pipe on the gb instead of the usual BYAP arrangement??

I reckon it has something to do with the size of that pipe (40mm??). A bigger pipe is required to move water fed by gravity, otherwise the frictional losses of a smaller pipe will reduce the flow. And a 40mm pipe all round the growbed is just a waste of valueable planting space.

What size is the mesh the pots sit in? Is the plan to grow lettuce and herbs in these pots, as well as give the fish some hiding space?

Does the air stone thro much water into the air(onto the mesh).

Bigger holes cut into into the PVC above the water line will help if there are a lot of leaves getting into the water. The SLO in my smaller tank has the water go over the top of the T if I let too much water go through the tanks or a fingerling tries to swim through the pipe.

Not a lot as yet, you thinking about corrosion with salt build up?

Looking good Joel cp seems the way to go i see you use 90 mm pipe excellent
seeing you are selling systems to make it easier to see the junk rising put an elbow at the top of the center pipe and put your tee [ top open just before the water exits the fish tank ]

Nice idea with the T near the side of tank, might add another one there...

I'm not convinced of CP as a way to go for kit systems Milne. Compared with our standard courtyard you have the same growing area, same stocking capabilities, except increased costs because you have to include a sump tank and more pipework/fittings. I'm struggling to find lots of positives above the courtyard for the extra costs.. Still, thats purely from my point of view as a kit system supplier, trying to keep costs to a minimum. And not everyone worries about cost....

On the plus side, it is fun to play with something new and I do like the way the pots hang in the fish tank.. :)

Yep, Ivan was spot on with the pipe size reasoning.....

And yes Spunyata multiple reasons for the mesh... It's 100mm x 100mm.

Wow, it's been a year since this thread was updated so I figured it was probably time for a couple of pictures.

The system has done very will over the past 12 months had some great crops of peas and beetroot as well as other bits and pices, I don;t know where some of the past pics are now, but I'll stick up todays current ones and try to remember to update more often..

We had also fixed the legs on the system by adding the cut off steel legs rather than bricks. Here's a variety of plants all doing pretty well at the moment.

Silvers have done pretty well considering we haven;t fed them huge amounts, we only lost one and that was to a bird, it sat on the wire mesh and picked one out, then left it in the growbed, so we still have 24 fish in the system.

What did you use for the window EB? Perspex?
I have been considering this idea on my new FT and have a sheet of perspex, just not too sure how to go about it yet.

Also, what size FT is this one and do you still have these available?

System looks good btw. :thumbleft:

Did you give up on the idea of having pots in the mesh on top, I couldn't see any in the photos?

The reason I ask is that I found my own tank top tubs to massively under perform compared to the flood and drain growbeds. Mine were much large and difficult to remove when harvesting fish so I won't be putting them in when I redesign my system.

I think the reason for the plant under performance is that the water in th bottom of the tubs did not circulate aswell as the GB water so was probably deficient in oxygen, made a good spot for frogs to live though.

Hey charlie it is a 1000 litre tank and we can get them in!
The reason that the pots aren't shown is that we have to cover the tank at night with a finer mesh. We still have a few plants in there, but have to take them out daily to protect from the pesky birds.

I have plenty of pots in my system. Works really well for herbs. Great way to stop them from taking over your normal grow beds! They flourish just as well as normal.

I thought I'd updated more recently, must have put it in a different thread... Hmmmm, just took some pics but will have to wait for the puter cable to be freed up, backing up the puter system at the moment..
