experiment if any one has done this?

200l drum, chest freezer to fit 20 liter buckets of ice also icream containers.

im not sure if there is such a thing but electronic thermometor switch that turns on pump for say when a 2000 liter pond gets overheated for trout

put ice in drum in morning when the temperature reaches 23 degrees in pond switch trigger to run water from drum into large pond.

my question if any one has done this is how long to run water from ice drum to main pond?

I used up to 65kg of ice/day on hot days to keep my AP system a bit cooler last year. That was only enough to partially offset the daily temperature rise, which would have required ~150kg of ice to cool 6000l by 3C (from memory, I did calculate it and write it somewhere in my system thread). I accumulated ice for weeks and kept making it as fast as I could in order to meet the demands for the hotter days. Unless you have a particulalrly high capacity freezer, you will probably struggle to make much difference unless you accumulate plenty of ice, depending of course on how much heat gain you have in your system in hot weather.

what would be a rough calculation on 120 liters on 2000 liters?

You start with 1 litre of water, which is 1kg, but ice expands to a lower density, so 1kg of ice takes up a bit more volume than 1l.

2000l water requires 8360kJ to be removed to cool by 1 degree C

Latent Heat of Fusion for ice -> water is -334kJ/kg @ 0C

Specific Heat of ice a bit below freezing is about 2kJ/kg, so 2kg of ice will cool 1kg of water, per degree the ice is below freezing, and the water (120kg of melted ice) warming from 0C to the system water temp helps a bit too (4.18kJ/kg per degree)

So, 120kg of ice will cool 2000l of water by about 5C, assuming there is no energy going into the water to heat it up while you are trying to cool it.

Why not use a water chiller we have them at work to cool down chemicals that need to be at a certain temperature

Look its possible but you need to invest such a large amount of energy to make stuff all of a difference.

Just as you need a massive heater to keep things warm in water you need a massive chiller to keep things cool.

They would be great, but cost a lot for a large enough unit, and (for me) would only be required for a few weeks per year, whereas my ice is free, but a lot more effort.

I was amused at the assumption; the poster lives in WA.
Summer is *frack* hot (no matter what we are told) yes it's theoretically possible but on 2kl water it would like having a vet bill every couple of months.

I could be wrong of course, and if there is a huge new solar system on the roof and they are getting *frack* all on the buyback why bother with energy costs?
