Is it a bad idea to have the input flow of a RDF create a swirl on the inner part so as sort of to combine the benefits of a swirl filter with the RDF?

RDF? Do you mean Radial Flow Filter (RFF) aka Radial Flow Settler (RFS)? If that's what you're asking I'm not really sure whether it would help or hurt the settling - my gut says it would not work as well but I could be wrong and it might depend on how it's done :dontknow:

Sorry, I meant RFF

I don't have a way to objectively measure, but having run the swirl inside the new RFF it seems to be working well.

Post up some pics. I'm curious about this and I'd like to see how you set this up.

Here we go. It is a pretty stock standard RFF and then I've just directed the input flow to create a swirl around the inner compartment.ImageImage

Now that I see how you've done this, I think it will work pretty well as long as the flow isn't too fast to let the solids settle out. You've lengthened the path that the flow has to take which is a good thing usually. I did something similar on a Static Upflow Filter (on mine the flow goes into the outside chamber and flows back up through an inner chamber filled with floating media, then out - so the reverse of your's). You could probably do it several ways with a similar setup and most would work as long as the water flows slowly enough for the solids to settle and doesn't pick the solids back up off the bottom.

Thanks for posting up the pics
