12 Distillation of spirits

A person shall not distil spirits unless the person is licensed under this Act so to do or otherwise than in accordance with the licence granted to the person under this Act.

Penalty: 50 penalty units.

Note: See section 4AA of the Crimes Act 1914 for the current value of a penalty unit.

i think section 12 is the clincher.

yes section 10 an 11 dont apply to manufacture, buying selling or use for NON alki stuff.

BUT section 12 prohibits ANY distilling unless licenced.

gotta read forward and back a few sections with these docs. i prefer to print them

i think the blind thing is a perpetuated story that helps control the amount of people actually doing it.

it probably had its roots in truth, any wood (or fibrous i think) material in the wash may ferment to methanol.

for people using refined sugar as the starting point i dont think its a huge concern.

i've HEARD

that most people discard the first 100ml or so to be double sure, but consider my next point.

methanol to my knowledge is not CREATED by the distilling process, only concentrated along with the ethanol.

lets SAY that a wine of 15% alc. has a given amount of methanol, you distill it to 75% and get 5x the methanol.

if you drink one glass of the 15% beverage or 1 shot of the 75% beverage you still ingest the same amount of methanol.

I don't drink much, but its nice to make it your self because I save money, no one makes it the way I like it, and my friend come by to see me more often

It all started in high school when our chemistry teacher, after teaching us how make hydrogen and explode milk cartons, tought us about distilling wood and the discussed the process of fungus producing alcohol followed with stories of his college brewing days. Man those where the days when you could get a real education. Now days they don't teach anything because they are afraid you will get others drunk or blow something up :roll:

Its doing pretty well here too! I have a friend who is a nurse and he saw one case where a girl had drunk someones homemadespirits and had been taken to the hospital with Methanol poisioning,No feelings in extremities, loss of vision etc, He had to inject pure ethanol and I think they hooked her up to one of the dialysis machines to clear it out of her system. I think that this makes it more than a myth.

Part and parcel of home brewing being legal in the US is that people doing it have (nearly) professional grade equipment and supplies. Granted, my personal knowledge of all events in the country is limited, but I've never even heard of a case of methanol poisoning.

Here is my preferred method of "distillation." Its safe, very effective and make for superior flavor in my wine.

Two steps:

1) Once the alcohol content is where you want it put in the freezer. It take some time to get the timing or temp right. The idea is to freeze most of the water. The alcohol and sugar will not freeze.

2) pour off the 'brew'. It a clean pure crisp tasting brew. The ice that remains behind will have some of the good stuff in it, but its mostly water so chunk it.If you do this twice or more you can get wine that is flammable! Its the best way to safely make a good flavorful sweet "brew."

This is the same method used to distill hydrogen peroxide up to 50%.
