They were slow to really get going but the hot pepper plants in my system are going grand now! In the early days of my system, they suffered iron def as well as perhaps potassium def. They also got attacked a bit by aphids and some of them got eaten by other bugs. To some extent this can be explained by a new immature system. On the other side, the weather was a little cool when they were small plants.

Lots and lots of Cayenne, Quite a few Jalapeno, the quickest were the Hot Wax, and Finally we got some Habanero!

If in a hot climate or long season location, I think hot peppers are a great AP plant since they are fairly compact, good looking plants with many uses (food/seasoning as well as possible insecticide.)

I've moved most of my pepper plants into grow beds that are now under plastic, perhaps they can survive the winter and be perennial here.

TCL, I've found in my soil gardens that if I prune the peppers right back over winter... basically to bare trunk/branch.... they come back just fine in spring...

I've got a Habanero and a Lemon Aji in my bed. I had several of the Lemon Aji last season and they went rank. I ripped all but 1 of them out and cut that one right back. It came back well this season.

The Habanero is meant to be the black/chocolate variety, but unfortunately it is not. Bought the seeds at cost, so that was a rip off.

Will take some picks later. They have both set some fruit already and have piles of flowers.

my habanero (orange) was almost destroyed by thrips in april.

any other nasty predators of chillis/capsicums/peppers?

It has always amazed me all the things that eat chillis - even habaneros, from caterillers to grasshoppers. They must have sore arses when they shit :lol:

Apparently the chemical in hot peppers and chillies that affect us so much is something particular to mammals. Apparently birds, fish, and many bugs arn't deterred. But making a hot pepper spray might help stop the squirrles from doing damage around my place. They have taken to chewing through the netting over our chicken run to get at some plants inside and in the process leaving big holes for the chickens to get out!!!!!!

I've got some jolokia seeds, but favourite chile is the serrano,
as they're the traditional chile used in gaucamole.
Thick flesh like jalapeno, but more intense heat/flavour

Had a habanero in a concrete pot with plain dirt, lived for 5 years
never grew any others outside of a season

I got a bell capsicum plant thats 3 years old in my dirt garden..... Makes the sweetest little friut

i just planted out some jalepeno chilli seedlings in winter, during a massive cold snap (whoops) and theyve started growing in the last 2 weeks with some warmer weather . . . . how long does it usually take for the plants to fruit??

Im overwintering a jalapeno in the greenhouse. They will last for years if just pruned back like Rupert said above. They sprout again in spring and you will get much earlier fruit from them than a new seedling.

Hey all,
Yep it is that time off year to plant chillies again woohoo, they usually start to produce fruit after about a month and a half sometimes 3 for other varieties.

Yeah my habanero has lasted ok through the winter, and I think we are getting past it, things are starting to warm up. I expect that this coming summer the plant will be huge..

And I guess I'll be sitting there wondering what to do with dozens of red hot habaneros when I can't handle anything much more than a sweet chili sauce... :lol:

I had a glut of orange habs a few years ago, and cut them in half (wearing rubber gloves), and dried them good in the dehydrator. Ground them up to make chilli powder. I think that little jar is going to last me a long time hehe
You had to be careful walking past the dehydrator as a wiff of the fumes would nearly take your head off :shock:
