I have purchased an IBC.

Tools/gear to buy:
1. Good quality spirit level
2. Water Pump
3. Pipes and Hoses
4. Air Pump

Questions to be answered:

1. What fish? - Most likely trout for the winter
2. How many Fish? - *shrug?*
3. What grow medium? - I like the idea of just using 20mm gravel as per murray's video and also because it's dirt(rock?) cheap
4. What flow system? CF, Auto Syphon or Timer Flood Drain?

Further questions:

What pump to buy - looking into one from BYAP or alternatively something off ebay. Need to work out a redundancy system for both water and air and the design.

Considering using a blue barrel as a sump with water flow FT>Sump>GB>FT

Do I really need to wash my media? Murray says no, everyone here says yes.

Are pond pumps the same as dirty water pumps and will they get damaged if I don't wash my media?

What fish? - Most likely trout for the winter - Trout need temp below approx 20c to survive and need plenty of oxygen
2. How many Fish? - *shrug?* - 5 fish maybe, depends on your media beds capacity(filtration) and dossilved oxygen??
3. What grow medium? - I like the idea of just using 20mm gravel as per murray's video and also because it's dirt(rock?) cheap Gravel is fine, just do the vinigar test, did wash my scouria at all...
4. What flow system? CF, Auto Syphon or Timer Flood Drain? CF for simlicity

Make sure it has a good quality bubble!

As for washing, a lot of people dont. But for an IBC system with gravel, it will take all of 20 mins to squirt it down and get the worst of the sand etc off.

So it turns out an IBC won't fit in the back of a kia carnival

yeah but I've never strapped anything to the roof before nor did I bring my ratchet straps. I also wasn't confident that if i strapped it on that it would stay there... the guy will drop it off to me in the next few days for a case of beer.

I've also found some dirt cheap IBCs in homebush but same problem, no way to transport the buggers... that and I want to stick with a small system and i already have the one.

Yeah they look bigger in person dont they.lol... Maybe trailer hire? Here you can get a 6x4 trailer With 24hr hire for $20.

if it was a question of pure money then yes but unfortunately time is a precious commodity for me so the delivery works out better for me.

by the time i spent 2+ hours stuffing around picking up a trailer, driving for 2 hours and then dropping it back off I'd rather spend the extra $20 and be done with it

Besides I still don't have my angle grinder and pipes etc etc so there is no hurry. My only concern is that by the time i get it built and cycled it'll be too late to put the trout in as they won't grow big enough before it gets hot

I've received delivery of my IBC and now must decide where it will live. I need to probably set it up in this part of the yard

But i was also toying with the idea of putting just the growbed up there and leaving the FT under the deck somewhere. My only concern is when washing the deck that crap and chemicals could go into the FT.

pumping the water up shouldn't be an issue it's no more than 1m head. More like 50cm

I reckon you would want to be careful about what you wash the deck with..

Although you could put a cover over the FT to stop nasties from the deck washing in; if you put the FT under the decking then you might have difficulty accessing the tank when it's finally time to harvest, or should you ever need to do any "maintenance". When choosing a spot for your AP system there is a lot to think about; sunlight, access and proximity to the kitchen. The IBC of AP has detailed discussions to help you decide; it's easier to put a system in the right place first, than moving a system later.

since I'll be cutting the IBC down to make the growbed I don't think there will be any issues with access. Obviously I don't want to me trying to move 500kg+ of tank and water at a later stage hence my posting this for opinions. The top part of the yard is nice and sunny for the GB but will become problematic in the summer with the water getting too hot.

Maybe I could put the FT here to the right of the hot water tank

I could see a single IBC system next to the HWS and if you want to expand, another growbed on the deck to the left of the stairs, allowing easy access to your herbs from the house :lol:
