Hi All,

Redcliffe 4020.

I have read the book, watched the videos, joined the forums but more importantly, I have finished the pizza oven and am half way through finishing the BBQ. Once the other half-dozen half-completed projects are done then I am allowed to start on AP.

However the garden is mostly shaded by surrounding houses so not a lot of sunlight. The project has to look nice, so no blue barrels or even IBCs. No visible pipework either.

I am suffering from too much information at the moment! Do I bury my fish tank so it doesn't get too hot in summer? Do I have to have it in a green house so it doesn't get too cold in winter? Can I get the right consistent temperature for Barramundi or do I have to have Silver Perch (Family not excited about silver perch!) Constant Flood or Flood and Drain, solar powered pump. Etc. etc. etc.

Most likely I will be getting an off the shelf kit, and then hiding it behind raised brick walls.

I want to show the wife some systems but anything that looks 'messy' will have the opposite effect.

I have 80m2 and in that space I have to house the BBQ, Pizza Oven, giant Hill's Hoist, seating area and a couple of trees. The FT and grow beds will have to be along the fence lines which is not ideal!

Anyway, I look forward to reading the rest of the forum!

And she cameth down to the garden, and she said.

'fore the christening of the first born son. The hideous water beast of the garden, whose spindly skeleton and watery bowels be open for all to see, shalt be adorned in with mavelous robes and crisp lines. And the beast shalt be tammed and cut off from the world of man such that small children can run and play near the beast with out fear of being cosumed by into its belly. And so it shalt be done.

And it was.

Hey Guys,

New to Aquaponics in Chinchilla, Darling Downs region.

Just finished building my system - ~700L water tank, 200L grow bed. Next month I'll put 25 jade perch in there. Exciting!!!

Hiyas!
I'm on the southern end of the Gold Coast and been at the researching, researching & more researching end of things for the last couple of months.

I got myself 2 reasonably priced IBC's just before xmas and looking to start construction at the end of the month.

I am thinking for starters to cut 1 of the IBC's with 800cm high for the FT and the 200 left over as a shallow GB for my herbs and lettuce greens. Then the other IBC cut in half for 2 500cm deep GB's for the rest of the veg

Fishwise I am thinking barramundi and/or jade perch if they get along. I also wouldn't mind sticking some redclaw or mussels in there if thats not getting too optomistic.

For growing media cost is an issue so I am going to use 3/4 blue metal and top it up with hydroton clay.

My next stage is to build a decent stand for the growbeds that is sturdy enough for the weight.
Is anyone here mathematically minded and can help me with approximate weight of my growbeds?
I will be running 2 500L (half IBC's) + 1 200cm deep IBC all in a line on the same stand preferably.
(once that is set up I will expand with another 800L FT and another growbed the same size)

I was set on doing it without a sump in between but after further reading here I might reconsider that. For the pump I have sourced a 3000L/hr submersible with a 4m heading for $75. Does that sound a reasonable price and suitable??

I look forward to trawling here for more info and getting to know you all. Thanks in advance for any answers to my many questions.

Oh...if anyone is located near me feel free to message me

Cheers :)

Is anyone on here that can answer my questions?

I am ready to start setting up but really need to have some idea of how heavy my growbeds are going to be so that I can design and make a suitable stand.

Cheers in advance for your help

Pump should be fine, I got a 3000lt hr pump from bunnings for about price and it is still running okay.

As far as weight goes. 500lt of water will equal 500kg. it's generally accepted that around 60% of your GB will contain the media, and about 40% will be the water....I think that's right. So find out how much 1/2sq meter of blue metal weighs, take 60% of that, and add 200kg for the water...then you will have the weight of one 500lt grow bed. Apply similar method to the rest.

Someone else please speak up if I've got my numbers off...I'm tired.
