Just thought I would ask, anyone know a good source of tilapia here in NC? I am aware of several places out of state that I could have shipped to me but just wondering if there are any closer that I could possibly pick up.
Thanks!

I'm in Vale, North Carolina and looking to get started in aquaponics very soon. There are so many designs out there it is overwhelming. IBC appears to be the most common.

I want a system that will provide enough tilapia and veggies for a family of four. I would really like to set up something that would allow me to grow year round so I guess a hoop house build is in the future.

I have tons of space and constant sun.

I have no idea where to start with the build. With the tons of info available can someone simplify my research and point me to the best source?

Mark

hey markc

thats a tough one.... every system is different, so you will just have to find one you like and use all the best parts of it to build yours....

your not to far from ashville....your elevation is around 1000 feet above sea level... so not sure you can get talipia to grow out in time... unless you heat the water, which costs a bunch....

best type of fish to grow is what ever is local to your area... they are already suited to the seasons there....

get up a rough sketch and start a system thread and all here will help get your design smoothed out

Like JT said without supplemental heat you probably shouldn't go with tilapia. My water temps are staying in the mid-60s to low-70s currently, but were in the 40s not even a month ago.
Right now I'm running goldfish, bluegill, and channel cats (water is really too cool for the cats for ideal growth, but they are doing OK).
