Well it's the first post of the new year, hope to get a lot done this year AP-wise.

Holidays are over and I got to work on the AP setup today. Started from the FT and tried to work out from there. Got a grid made for the bottom of the RFF, and re-did the bucket mounting twice. I realized looking at my photos that I used the wrong bucket - the hole in the bucket is too close to the rim. Anyway that poor trash can has a lot of holes here and there as I fumbled around trying to get things situated.

I decided after getting done today that I want to move the RFF out into the greenhouse on the other side of the wall. It will be a lot easier to change the layout at will. So only the FT will be inside the shed and all the other stuff will be in the greenhouse area.

I am not sure yet what follows the RFF, I was thinking about just a stacked set of buckets with gravel that would be dosed once a day with the RFF solids. I did have a good idea to use a garden hose for the RFF solids outlet because that will let me put them wherever I decide they should go without knowing right now.

I plan to have a very shallow distributed sump, using connected buckets or something at each collection point in the greenhouse, but this will be a problem because of the shallowness. I was thinking a water container and float valve could help to make sure the pump doesn't run dry in the shallow sump.

Going to be prototyping some ideas for a lettuce wall and a new trough setup.

Got a juicer and a table saw for Xmas, AP-wise those were the perfect gifts!

Plan to get trout soon, but I'm going to be keeping an eye on hybrid striped bass as a possible Spring fish.

Decided to put the SLO drain totally under the water line to help the solids get out, rather than making a kind of gutter out of the pipe where it is horizontal. I think that might be why Crusty/Earthan Group/Paul makes those funny diagonal SLO pipes.

I didn't take a picture of it but after this I used zip ties to tie the elbows together and also to mount a reef propeller pump near the outlet, should make a really nice circulation.

Air stones will be at the bottom of the SLO near the atrium grate. Seriously considering mounting filter material around the vertical pipe of the SLO like vanes, I do not think it would get that gummed up actually. Using this material:
http://www.amazon.com/Puro-KleenTM-Klee ... filter+pad

Like this only larger scale in the middle of the FT: viewtopic.php?p=279425#p279425

(someone please talk me out of this idea haha)

AP in the snow tonight, and First Water!

Unfortunately the pump outpaces the draining (FT then RFF then sump) and I'll have to deal with that before I can run it full time. Got a reef propeller pump and one air stone on the SLO so far. Took a while to fill the tank as it is all the way up at the other end of the yard and I have to use three hoses in a chain to get that far.

Monday night's low is supposed to be 1 degree F.

Moved the RFF out to the greenhouse area.

Might try this fountain thing with the pump, it looks cool. :glasses1:

The drains are 2" SLO with 4" I think atrium grate, two elbows then a tee, then a 2" to 1 1/2" adapter, then 1 1/2" tee then elbow then elbow then tee to the RFF which has another tee and elbow inside it. The the RFF outlet is 1 1/4" to a tee then elbow then straight into the sump. I think the first place to widen is the 1 1/2" tees and elbows from the FT to the RFF through the wall, maybe upgrade those to 2". The other place it might be slow could be the atrium grate area. The tank would overflow if I didn't shut the pump off first. The RFF and sump don't seem to be running slow to me. I might just add a tee on the pump and a valve and throttle it down for the moment so I can run it.

Got some things done yesterday, first thing was to get the water flowing. Turned out the pipes has filled with ice (see pipe below) and there was about a 1/2" layer of ice on the RFF and sump. Took awhile to take everything apart and get the ice cylinders out and get past the ice to the water flowing all the way. Anyway now it is finally going and I also hooked up a 300 watt heater all the time, I have to remember to unplug it before using any power tools in the shed. Just moving the water all the time should keep it from freezing again.

Yesterday was prototyping day for the new trough design and the planted wall. I didn't get far on the planted wall but I did put together the new trough and tested it for leaks. It only leaked a little even though it was a pain to put together and I was expecting it to leak like sieve. Seeing it in person and trying to put it together gave me a better idea, that gave me AP Insomnia last night because I was so excited. I am not going to describe or show this until I have built it. Stay tuned but it should be pretty cool to everyone.

Putting the RFF out in the greenhouse area was a great choice because I can see how to easily put a biofilter and other things in that area all hooked together.

The teed pipe can go to a biofilter and then join back up with the RFF drain.

Thinwall 3/4" PVC pipe does not hold together at all as good as the thicker walled pipe, so I used zip ties and wire to help keep the pipes together without gluing.

So the 300 watt heater and circulating the water did not keep the system from freezing last night, it's currently 5 degrees F / -15 C.

Good luck to the mid Westerners in even colder temps!

That was the prototype for the new trough design, but I have better ideas now after putting that together. Don't know when I'll get on it because things are pretty busy now that I'm back to work. I hate being busy!

One thing the Midwest has going for it is lots of sunshine on most cold days so even with the cold it can get really warm in a greenhouse during the day (just need to figure a way to save that heat).

Sounds like just too many days of super cold weather all in a row without sunshine. Pretty sure mine won't freeze unless it gets down in the low teens for an extended period. This year the water got to 36 before I decided to play it safe and use a portable heater in the greenhouse to bring the air temp up to 45 (Outside temp got as low as 9 F and had in the 20's or below the whole week). Putting the electric air heater in helped keep the water in the upper 30's to lower 40's. Last year I didn't have to heat at all but the water temp made it to 33, it's hit or miss I guess.

Any broken pipes or other problems?
