This is my Xmas project from Xmas 2014, so just over a year old now. I wanted a second system that I could chill over the hottest day's of summer to keep some of BenG's salmon alive into next winter and also give the smaller leftover trout time to grow out a bit bigger.
To reduce the actual chiller run time I made it constant flood with deep IBC growbeds, the water level is about 80mm below the surface scoria, tank is partly buried and insulated, filter is insulated and packed around with dirt and the sump is half an IBC buried under the growbeds. I put shade cloth over everything and the tank is under a shady tree and the back fence shades the whole system from early afternoon.
I suddenly have to go out, more tomorrow.

The idea was to keep it as simple, compact and foolproof (and economical) a build as possible. Pump in sump to fishtank then filter, growbeds and draining directly into the sump below.

rendang,

Looks like some great results! So, do you have numbers to share about the difference
between water temps in the chiller system versus the 1st system versus outside air?
It would be good to see what changes you made and their effect on water temps...

I was just getting to that :) We've had a mild start to summer and the chiller has easily kept the temps close to the set temp, but it has not really been put to the test yet with a couple of weeks of really hot weather. Ive only just started recording the temps here http://www.appquaponics.com:1337/users/rendang, (but the datacenter is experiencing problems just at the moment.)

The chiller is a Hailea 1000A, bought from gumtree for $600, controlled by an STC Temp Controller.

Temps chart. The ambient is reading higher than it should because its being affected by the sun and the heat from the modem but you can see the downtrend over the last few days of cloudy wet weather.http://www.appquaponics.com:1337/users/rendang/charts/m/201601

That's a lovely chart!

So do you expect that to enable the TTS (Trout Thru Summer) feature? ;-)

After a few cool days last week when the temperature of the large system actually fell below the small system, the heat returned full blast. Heading for 40c tomorrow but the chiller seems to be holding the temps down quite well.
