Single barrel system

I am fairly new to the concept of aquaponics. I wanted to ask about the bacteria that eats the amonia and convert it to the nitrates for the plants to consume. I am on the belief that the bacteria would need some time on the water to do their work, but it seems the system call for a constant flow of water.

I would like to confirm this flow of water, does the water fload and sit for a while before draining back to the fish or is the flow constantly cycling into the grow medium and back to the fish?

I really like this, its neat and simple.

I think people end up planting herbs and smaller plants in there however i have an idea.

What about making the grow bed at the top slightly deeper.

Get some pooping fish like koi, maybe 2 or 3.

Plant a larger fast growing tree vine, eg Kiwi/passionfruit.

That way it cant take over unwantingly.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this??

Kiwi berry etc chew through the water and it would be great to grow something like that in this setup. Just half burry the tank and get it up against a trellis. Neat and never have to water it.

I just run it full time and no need to make any changes I have 5 kale plants in the one on my balcony

I guess if you want there is no real problem with cutting the bed deeper. I thought about re-doing the ones on my balcony with beds 30cm deep but havnt needed to. if you cut it more than 25 cm you will need more than one bag of clay.

ahh i see, that makes sense. Keeps it simple and less required materials.

I just thought larger plants may require more root depth.

I grew tomatoes, eggplant and silver beet in my blue barrel system.. with the barrels cut length wise...
