After years of reading other peoples system threads, it’s time for my own!
Here’s the story so far!

Several years ago I was planning a “longish” Tassie trip.
As I keep African Cichlids, I was concerned about filter and water changes while I was gone.
Whilst looking for a method of filtering the water for extended periods,
I was told of a person that was growing bamboo as a filter.

One search led to another until I ended up here!

The concept had me hooked immediately.
Easy, Environmentally Friendly, Water saving, and Chemical Free. Not to mention fun!

Convincing the wife was going to be the challenge!
I started with a water feature that could only be described as “Micro”.
A small pump circulated water through a narrow growbed,
retained by stainless steel mesh, that actually sat in the Fish Tank.
It took about 10 litres of water. And I used it to grow a few “Designer” lettuces.
Turning point was when I caught her picking fresh lettuce to put into her sandwich.

Next step was to put a bagful of Goldies into a 350L bucket that was primarily to collect rain water,
But was beginning to collect mozzies instead.
The argument then was “We’ve already got the tank, let’s put a tub on the bench above it and grow some Strawberries”.

The Strawb’s went ballistic!

The Micro has recently been rejigged to use a 50 litre fish tank buried in the garden and the
pond section was filled with grow media, it now runs as flood and drain via a bell siphon.

Recently I ½ buried a 1000Litre tub, and made a stand to house 2 bathtubs.

I transferred the tub of Strawberies, along with all the water and fish from the 350L bucket into the larger system to help with bacterial growth.
Only after doing this did I realize that I had not taken any pics of it in its original position.

This new system is now up and running, and well on it’s way to being cycled and ready for some Silvers for the Summer,

Looking good Dicko. So where are the plans for the inevitable mass expansion? ;-)

As I told F&F today, the buried 1000L "Fish Tank" is Highly to become a "Sump" just as soon as the wife let's her guard down
