"Last summer we purchased a DIY system with a little bit of apprehension. Was it going to work – will it prove to be as successful as all the established systems we saw at the shop and on the website?

With a little bit of perseverance and lots of help from the folks at Backyard Aquaponics it has.

After a little while to get established the single bed system remarkably exploded into life. The fish were healthy and putting on weight and the vegetables were growing at an alarming rate. For instance we had planted 6 basil plants – we used the profusion of growth throughout the summer – we actually cut them back hard three times but the plants still grew fast and tall. Late autumn saw us remove them to spend all afternoon making pesto. Winter has been and gone and we are still finding tubs of pesto in the back of the food freezer!

We are just about to start planting our spring seedlings after an unstoppable autumn and winter growth of all our winter veggies. Last summer saw us have kilo’s and kilo’s of tomatoes, lettuce, basil and zucchini’s. Winter saw chard, silver beet, parsley and even an experiment with broad beans.

We are off down to the shop this weekend to purchase another bed to add to the single on the DIY system. Unfortunately we are insistent on buying another system to complement the established one and this time it’s going be the Backyard 3 bed! Occasionally we just pop down for a chat – they always have time and they are brilliant with their ongoing support. Actually their enthusiasm for everything Aquaponics is fabulous and if they had a coffee shop it would be hard for me to stay away.

If you contemplating purchasing a system – don’t hesitate – it a joy to have them – yep they need a little looking after, but not as much as a traditional in ground veggie patch. Forget the fertilizers, mulch, back breaking prep work and gallons of watering – get an Aquaponics system!
