Hello,

I have a sump tank with yabbies in it. The yabbies had babies. I have found some baby yabbies on occasion are getting sucked into the pump and end up in the filter.

What's a good way to stop baby yabbies getting sucked into the pump?

I'm not sure how big they are, but the pump should have a pickup screen on it. This can be wrapped with fiberglass window screen, or if that is not small enough, wrap it with filter pad material. Either one of these will need to be checked frequently for blockage / cleaning.

They also sell pump bags with smaller holes too for this.

Thank you. I am wondering how they even got through.

First the thin gaps I have on the pump intake and then surviving the turbine to get into the filter.

I will look into pump bags. I suppose they will need a lot of cleaning like other pre-pump filters. I have tried the sponge before but I wasn't sure if the yabbies would destroy it, which is the danger with anything in the tank.

I was also thinking, maybe raise it up from the floor about 10cm and put a PVC pipe or a bucket around it. I suppose they will still get in somehow but it might help, especially with the pump bag.
